Uruguayan referee says Lampard’s ghost goal was simp

Assistant referee of Uruguay Mauricio Espinosa denied that the ‘ghost goal’ of Frank Lampard against Germany was made mistake. He said that it was simply “bad luck”. He also mentioned further that such things happen in football.

With the ‘ghost goal’ Lampard thought he had equalised against Germany in the round of 16 encounter. Well, Espinosa and other officials failed to see the ball that crossed the line. The goal was ruled out.

Espinosa said to media, “You cannot talk about an error as it was not a technical mistake. It was simply bad luck with the ball moving at high speed which we couldn’t see as it came down over the line - even though I was properly positioned.”

Espinosa further added that the officials had realised it only after they reviewed the shot on television.

He said, “It was a very bitter business - and we had prepared (for the tournament) for so long. But these things happen and that’s that.”

After this error FIFA has said they will discuss the matter whether to introduce video replay technology in the games on the goalline.. The meeting is on July 21 and 22.
