Claudio Ranieri, former manager of Chelsea recently admitted that he had wanted to sign Michael Carrick when he was in charge at the Stamford Bridge but finally he went for Frank Lampard.

For four long years he had spent in west London and he brought number of key players to the club that also included Lampard, Petr Cech, Joe Cole and Claude Makelele.

Frank Lampard came from West Ham United for £11 million and this England midfielder had become one of the greatest ever signings of the club.

Ranieri admits now that his decision for opting Frank Lampard instead of Michael Carrick was correct.

He said to the Sunday Mirror, “At the time I signed him I wanted to sign Michael Carrick as well.”

He added, “We only had the money to sign one, so I had to make a decision which one to buy.”

Michael Carrick subsequently joined Tottenham Hotspur and after that he joined Manchester United in 2006.
